The controversial preacher Amritpal Singh failed to complete the required oath-taking ceremony as a Member of Parliament. Despite reaching out to the Punjab government on June 11 through his representative Imaan Singh Khara to secure a temporary release from detention for the parliamentary procedure,
Singh must still obtain official permission from the court. Tarsem Singh, Amritpal’s father, disclosed that the family is unaware of any response from the government regarding their request. Amritpal Singh, the leader of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ group, is currently incarcerated at Assam’s Dibrugarh prison along with his nine associates under the National Security Act (NSA). In the recent Lok Sabha elections, he contested as an independent candidate and garnered 404,430 votes, surpassing Congress’ Kulbir Singh Zira by 197,120 votes margin.
Following the successful oath-taking of Congress’ Gurjeet Singh Aujla in the Parliament, Amritpal Singh was publicly called upon to take the oath, yet he was notably absent during the ceremony. Amritpal Singh, who modelled himself after the deceased Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was apprehended in Punjab’s Moga district on April 23 last year after a pursuit that lasted over a month.
The Khalistan advocate had eluded the authorities in Jalandhar district on March 18 by changing vehicles and disguises. Along with his associates, Singh faced multiple criminal charges, including inciting social discord, attempted murder, assaulting police personnel, and obstructing public officials from carrying out their duties lawfully.
