Bandipora, Nov 2: The residents of Check Lawaypora and a few adjoining households of Lawaypora are facing an acute water crisis as the area has been left without any piped water supply. Locals said that for the past several days, not a single drop of water has reached their homes through pipelines.
According to residents, the crisis began after the water level in the Chandaji Nallah dropped significantly, reducing the flow of water to the Reshkol canal that feeds the area. As a result, Check Lawaypora has been receiving little to no water for days.
“We have no water in our taps. Every day, we have to walk nearly two kilometers to fetch water from a natural spring (cheshma). It has become a daily struggle, especially for women, children, and elderly people,” said a local resident.
Residents also expressed frustration over the attitude of the concerned department. “When it comes to collecting annual water fees, they never fail to reach us — but when it’s time to supply water, they are nowhere to be seen,” said another resident, voicing resentment over the poor response from authorities.
Locals further alleged that while nearby areas such as Panzigam receive clean water under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), Check Lawaypora continues to be ignored.
When contacted, an official from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department acknowledged the issue, stating that the scheme in the area has not yet been made functional. “The work on the project has been halted by the contractors for nearly a year. However, if there is any specific issue in a particular locality, we will look into it,” the official said, adding that only a few households in Lawaypora are currently facing the problem.
Meanwhile, residents have urged the district administration and the PHE Department to take immediate action to restore the water supply and ensure that clean JJM water is provided to every household in khayar, lawaypora, check without further delay.
