Bandipora, Feb 18: Markets across the Kashmir Valley are witnessing a surge in shoppers ahead of Ramadan, with bustling bazaars as people purchase dates, dry fruits, bakery items and traditional delicacies considered essential for the fasting month. Traders say the seasonal rush— which usually peaks in the final days before Ramadan— began earlier this year as families started stocking up well in advance.
Local political and social activist Hamida Jan said the onset of Ramadan makes it crucial for the administration to focus on market regulation and uninterrupted electricity supply. Speaking to media, she urged the district administration to ensure steady power supply, particularly during Sehri and Iftari, and to conduct regular market inspections to check price variations in vegetables and other essential commodities across different areas.
In Bandipora, shopkeepers reported a noticeable rise in sales over the past week, attributing the increase to heightened festive enthusiasm and improved customer turnout. Many retailers said they had arranged additional stock weeks earlier in anticipation of the increased demand.
“This is one of our busiest periods. We prepared early so customers don’t face shortages,” said a local dry-fruit seller in the town.
The pre-Ramadan shopping wave has infused renewed energy into small businesses that rely heavily on seasonal sales. Vendors dealing in confectionery, spices and traditional snacks said the strong early demand has raised hopes for better earnings compared to previous months of slow trade.
However, residents in several markets have appealed to traders to keep prices stable and avoid sudden hikes during the festive season. Shoppers have also urged authorities to carry out strict inspections to ensure quality standards, check expiry dates and take action against sellers found overcharging or offering outdated goods.
Locals believe that robust monitoring will help maintain fair market practices and protect consumers during one of the most significant shopping periods of the year.
