Manama, Bahrain, March 24: Bahrain has circulated a draft resolution in the United Nations Security Council seeking authorisation for member states to “use all necessary means” to ensure safe commercial navigation in the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions with Iran, according to a report by the The Jerusalem Post.
The draft condemns repeated threats and attacks on merchant vessels, calling such actions a threat to international peace and security. It proposes allowing states, acting individually or through multinational maritime partnerships, to take operational measures under Chapter VII of the UN Charter to maintain free passage, including within territorial waters of littoral states.
The text directs Iran to halt all attacks and attempts to obstruct lawful transit. It mandates quarterly reporting to the Security Council on actions taken under the proposed authorisation and signals possible future measures, including targeted sanctions.
Despite its strong provisions, the resolution faces significant hurdles in the Security Council, where Russia and China hold veto power. The initiative reflects a more assertive approach by Gulf states seeking concrete steps to secure one of the world’s most critical maritime energy routes.
