New Delhi, India, March 26: Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Thursday morning to meet his mother, Sonia Gandhi, who was admitted after experiencing respiratory discomfort on Tuesday night.
According to hospital officials, the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson remains stable and is under close observation. Doctors have administered antibiotics and are conducting further investigations to rule out infections in the stomach and urinary tract.
“Sonia Gandhi was admitted on Tuesday at 10:22 pm. She is stable. A team of specialists is monitoring her condition,” a hospital official said.
Hospital Chairman Ajay Swaroop stated on Wednesday that a detailed medical examination indicated a mild exacerbation of bronchial asthma, triggered by the combination of cold weather and high pollution levels in the capital.
Rahul Gandhi cancelled his planned visit to Kerala and addressed a rally in Kozhikode virtually. Explaining his absence, he told the gathering that he chose to remain in Delhi due to his mother’s sudden hospitalisation.
“I would have liked to come there, but I was forced to stay back. Yesterday, my mother was hospitalised and, as a son, I was quite worried. I know the people of Kerala will understand,” he said during the virtual address. He also expressed gratitude for the medical staff, mentioning a nurse from Kerala who checked on Sonia Gandhi through the night.
Sonia Gandhi has faced periodic health-related hospitalisations. In June last year, she was admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital for stomach-related issues and was kept under observation by the gastroenterology department. She continues to remain under observation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital as further medical management proceeds.
