New Delhi, March 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Phase I of the Noida International Airport in Jewar on March 28, marking a major milestone in India’s aviation expansion and regional connectivity.
In a statement ahead of his visit, the Prime Minister said the inauguration holds “immense importance” for the people of Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi-NCR region, noting that the project will significantly enhance connectivity and ease congestion at Indira Gandhi International Airport.“
Phase I of Noida International Airport will be inaugurated tomorrow. This will boost commerce and connectivity. It will ease congestion at the IGI Airport in Delhi,” PM Modi said. He added that the airport stands among India’s key greenfield projects and will also feature a robust cargo ecosystem, giving further impetus to the logistics sector.
According to the schedule, the Prime Minister will undertake a walkthrough of the terminal building prior to formally inaugurating the airport at around 12 noon, followed by a public address.
A Major Boost to India’s Aviation Infrastructure
The inauguration of the Jewar airport represents a significant step in India’s broader goal of emerging as a global aviation hub. Developed as the second international airport for Delhi-NCR, Noida International Airport will function in tandem with IGI Airport, forming an integrated dual-airport system aimed at expanding passenger capacity, diverting traffic load, and strengthening India’s regional and international air connectivity.
Phase I of the project has been executed under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model with an investment of approximately ₹11,200 crore. Initially, the airport will handle 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA), with provisions to scale up to 70 MPPA in subsequent phases.
The new airport features a 3,900-metre runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft and is equipped with modern navigation technologies, including an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and advanced airfield lighting to enable efficient, 24×7, all-weather operations.
Cargo Hub and MRO Facilities
A key highlight of the project is its expansive cargo ecosystem, including a Multi-Modal Cargo Hub with an Integrated Cargo Terminal and logistics zones. The cargo facility is designed to handle over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually, scalable to 18 lakh metric tonnes. A dedicated 40-acre Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) zone will further support India’s growing aviation fleet.
Sustainability and Design
Positioned as a future-ready and sustainable airport, the Noida International Airport aims to operate as a net-zero emissions facility. The architectural concept draws inspiration from India’s cultural heritage, incorporating elements symbolic of traditional ghats and havelis, blending modern aviation infrastructure with indigenous design motifs.
Strategic Connectivity
Located along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport is envisioned as a multi-modal transport hub with seamless links to road networks, railways, metro lines, and regional transit systems, ensuring efficient passenger and cargo movement across the NCR and neighbouring regions.
