Nalbari, Assam, India March 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday mounted a strong attack on the Congress during a public rally in Nalbari, accusing the party of engineering “demographic changes” in Assam for vote-bank politics. He asserted that if the Bharatiya Janata Party returns to power, it will identify and deport “every infiltrator” from the state within the next five years.
Amit Shah alleged that previous Congress governments facilitated illegal infiltration for decades, leading to significant demographic shifts. “Driven by greed for vote banks, the Congress party changed the entire demographics of Assam. Dhubri and its nine surrounding districts are now teeming with infiltrators,” he claimed.
He further credited Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for taking strict action to curb infiltration. “The Congress had kept the doors open for infiltrators for years. Himanta Biswa Sarma has shut the borders and reclaimed 1.25 lakh acres of land that had been occupied by infiltrators,” he said.
Making a decisive electoral pitch, Shah urged voters to elect a BJP government for the third consecutive term. “Form a ‘Lotus flower’ government once again. In the next five years, we will identify and deport every single infiltrator,” he declared. He reiterated that the BJP would detect, remove from electoral rolls and deport all individuals it categorises as infiltrators.
Highlighting the BJP-led government’s security achievements, Shah said peace had returned to Assam under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He cited the Bodo Peace Accord, Karbi Anglong Accord, DNLA Accord and the agreement with ULFA, noting that “10,000 people have laid down arms” in the past decade.
Contrasting the current situation with earlier years, he said incidents of violence and bomb blasts had “ceased” under BJP rule, bringing unprecedented stability to the state.
Shah also linked governance with cultural preservation, asserting, “This land, soil and culture belong to us. No infiltrator has any right over it.”
He announced that the BJP plans to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, arguing that it would ensure equality and end practices such as multiple marriages.
Assam is set to vote in a single phase across all 126 Assembly constituencies on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4, according to the Election Commission of India.
The state will witness a direct contest between the BJP-led NDA, seeking a third term, and the Indian National Congress, which aims to return to power after a decade in the opposition.
