New Delhi, India, March 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a unified message of peace from the Rajya Sabha, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy are essential as the West Asia conflict continues to disrupt global trade, energy flows, and the safety of Indians in the region.
The Prime Minister said the conflict has affected India’s trade routes and supplies of fuel and fertilisers, while noting that nearly one crore Indians living in Gulf countries face uncertainty. He highlighted that merchant vessels remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, with many Indian crew members onboard.
PM Modi said he has held multiple conversations with leaders across Iran, Israel, Gulf nations, and the United States since the conflict began, reaffirming India’s continuous diplomatic engagement.He reported that more than 3.75 lakh Indians have been evacuated, including over 1,000 from Iran, and said the government is prioritising the safety of citizens abroad.
PM Modi reiterated that India is working to ensure safe movement of its ships through diplomatic channels.Tensions in West Asia escalated after the killing of Ali Khamenei in a joint strike by the US and Israel on February 28, prompting Iranian retaliation across multiple Gulf countries and further disrupting maritime routes.
Meanwhile, Arab News, citing the Israeli outlet Yedioth Ahronoth, reported that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has signalled willingness to enter negotiations with the United States.
