EAM Jaishankar to Attend G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in France
New Delhi, India, March 26: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will visit Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay, France, from Thursday to Friday to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) alongside partner countries, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in an official statement.
Jaishankar will attend the meeting at the invitation of the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot. On the sidelines, he is also expected to hold bilateral talks with several of his counterparts.
According to a background briefing by the French Foreign Ministry, this edition of the G7 FMM will focus on major global challenges, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, reconstruction priorities, maritime security, and reforms to global governance mechanisms. The consultations will build on recent informal ministerial interactions held on the margins of the UN General Assembly and will act as a preparatory forum ahead of the G7 Leaders’ Summit scheduled in Evian from June 13 to 15.
Outlining the agenda, French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux said the meeting aims to deliver “concrete results,” with particular emphasis on Ukraine. A dedicated session will discuss reconstruction efforts, including priorities such as nuclear safety, humanitarian demining, and funding mechanisms. The role of international financial institutions, especially the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), will be highlighted in mobilising investments for Ukraine’s recovery.
The ministers will also deliberate on maritime security and the resilience of global supply chains. Discussions are expected to cover threats such as narco-trafficking and challenges linked to critical minerals. A separate session will address maritime routes and the protection of freedom of navigation.
On the governance front, the G7 is likely to push for more effective and responsive multilateral frameworks. The French briefing noted efforts to develop “innovative approaches” to address emerging, cross-border threats that undermine national sovereignty.
The meeting will additionally feature interactions with non-G7 partner countries, including India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Ukraine, reflecting the forum’s broader consultative outreach. Most sessions are scheduled for Thursday, with concluding engagements set for Friday morning.
