Tel Aviv, Israel, March 28: A missile launched from Yemen towards Israel on Saturday morning triggered air-raid sirens across Beersheba and several surrounding communities, marking the first such attack by the Houthis since Israel initiated Operation Roaring Lion nearly a month ago, the Israel Defense Forces said.
According to a report by the Jerusalem Post, Israel’s air-defence systems were activated to intercept the projectile. Initial assessments indicated no casualties or direct impacts.
The launch came a day after the Yemeni Armed Forces declared their readiness for direct military intervention should what they termed “American-Israeli aggression” against Iran and regional “Axis of Resistance” groups continue to escalate.
The warning was issued by Houthi spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree, as reported by Iran’s state-run Press TV.
“We confirm that our hands are on the trigger for direct military intervention,” Saree said, warning that escalation by additional parties or the use of the Red Sea for hostile operations against Iran or other Muslim countries could trigger a wider response.
Press TV described the statement as rooted in Yemen’s “religious and moral responsibility” to confront what it claimed were broader regional campaigns targeting the Islamic Republic, the Axis of Resistance, and the wider Muslim world. It accused Israel of pursuing “Greater Israel” ambitions and alleged that regional populations had a “legitimate right” to resist such plans.
Saree further said that Yemeni forces were acting in coordination with regional allies with the aim of inflicting a “major defeat” on perceived aggressors. He urged the United States and Israel to respond to diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending hostilities, calling current military actions “unjust, oppressive, and unjustified,” and harmful to global security and economic stability.
The statement also reiterated calls for the implementation of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement signed last October under a US-backed framework. It warned against any tightening of the blockade on Yemen, cautioning that additional pressure could exacerbate regional tensions.
Saturday’s missile launch marks a significant escalation in the Houthis’ posture amid rapidly shifting dynamics in West Asia, heightening concerns of broader regional involvement in the ongoing conflict.
