Bandipora, J&K, India Mar 28: Former minister and senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Naeem Akhtar on Saturday expressed serious concern over administrative shortcomings in Bandipora, alleging that a significant number of key posts remain vacant while several officers are burdened with multiple charges, hampering governance and slowing decision-making.
Speaking to reporters, Akhtar said Bandipora is among the worst-affected districts in Jammu and Kashmir, where senior officials continue to shoulder additional responsibilities due to prolonged vacancies. Such arrangements, he said, compromise efficiency and make it difficult for officers to deliver effectively.
“When one officer is given several responsibilities, it becomes impossible to do justice to any of them. Delays and inefficiency are the natural outcome,” Akhtar remarked.
The PDP leader also raised concerns over alleged irregularities in postings and promotions, particularly within the health department. He claimed that two to three hundred promotions were recently made amid serious allegations of financial impropriety.
“Reports suggest that money has exchanged hands during these promotions. If true, this is deeply troubling and erodes public trust,” he said.Akhtar stressed the need for filling key administrative posts—including commissioners, additional commissioners and other senior positions—without resorting to long-term temporary arrangements. He warned that such gaps weaken institutions and directly impact service delivery on the ground.
Urging immediate intervention, he appealed to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also heads the General Administration Department, to review the situation urgently. He said the government must investigate the reasons behind the persistent vacancies in Bandipora and ensure timely appointments.
“Unless these posts are filled and administrative clarity is restored, governance and essential services will continue to suffer,” Akhtar cautioned.
