Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India March 29: A woman died and two others sustained injuries after a section of the ceiling collapsed early Sunday at the famed Samayapuram Mariamman Temple in Trichy, police said.
The incident took place at the Sannathi Street mandapam, where several devotees were resting after arriving for morning darshan. According to Trichy district police, the deceased has been identified as Nadiya, 32, a resident of Thanjavur district. She reportedly died on the spot.
Two other devotees who were injured in the collapse were immediately rescued by people present at the site and shifted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital with the assistance of the 108 ambulance service.Following the mishap, police personnel from Samayapuram reached the location, cordoned off the affected area, and initiated a detailed investigation into the cause of the structural failure.
The temple, a major Shakti shrine in Tamil Nadu, attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year. Many reach the shrine on foot and stay overnight in the vicinity to offer early morning prayers, resulting in heavy congregation around the mandapams. Authorities are expected to review the structural safety of the surrounding areas as part of the ongoing inquiry.
